The military junta has been firing artillery at villages in western Hpruso Township, Karenni State, even though no clashes have taken place between the two sides, residents say.
Between November 1 and 4, the junta fired artillery shells at villages at least three times, according to residents. The shells exploded inside a village, and one civilian home was hit and damaged, a male resident said.
“No clashes have taken place between the two sides. However, the military has shelled the area about three times since the start of the month. One shell landed in the village and damaged a house,” the resident said.
Residents said the junta has also been carrying out drone surveillance and flying drones over villages in the area. They added that junta suicide drone attacks in October forced some internally displaced people (IDPs) to flee again to safer locations.
Residents say they are worried about their safety because the junta is using drones and artillery to attack villages where civilians live, which are not military targets.
