A 35-year-old woman was injured on the afternoon of August 25 when junta forces carried out a drone bomb attack on a hill farm in eastern Hpruso Township, Karenni State, according to residents.
The junta had been attacking farmers growing peanuts with drone bombs, and the woman who was struck is currently receiving medical treatment.
“One of them was hit on the head, near the ear, which is worrying too,” said a local administrative official.
On August 22, a drone bomb attack on the same hill farm had already injured a 17-year-old student girl.
“School was closed on Saturday, so the IDP student wanting to help her parents went along to the farm when she was hit,” said an IDP man. “We’re quite worried now. They’re chasing after and bombing families who go out to their farms; the drone comes almost every day.”
Residents say junta forces have been intentionally targeting farming areas with drones and bombs since June, when the hill farming season began, and have been using drones for scouting over the area almost daily. During August, three women and one man were injured by drone bomb attacks.
Farmers mainly grow hill rice and peanuts for their livelihoods, and despite the fear caused by the junta’s drone attacks, they have little choice but to keep working, said an IDP man.
“It’s become extremely brutal, the Junta dropping bombs on innocent civilians,” an IDP man said. “We don’t know what will happen next. We’re all very worried.”
Residents say junta forces control the Demoso–Hpruso–Bawlakale Union Highway, where they are conducting military column operations, while also using drones and bombs to attack people working in agriculture.
