Hpasawng Township, Karenni State — A heavy downpour triggered a landslide in the Mawchi area of Hpasawng Township, killing a local woman and damaging several homes, according to U Banyar, Secretary (2) of the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State.
The incident occurred during the night of July 27.
“Yes, there was a landslide and one resident died. It happened in Quarter 16 and Kyaukkyar Quarter. About five or six houses were damaged,” U Banyar said.
The victim, 58-year-old Daw Hah Htoo, reportedly died from her injuries around 4 a.m. on July 28.
Two separate wards were affected by the landslide. In one, a house was damaged and ground fissures were observed, though no casualties were reported. In the other, Daw Hah Htoo lost her life, and several homes were damaged.
U Banyar urged the public—already burdened by ongoing military conflict and natural disasters—to stay informed about weather conditions.
“People are generally aware, but I want to emphasize the importance of consistently following weather updates,” he said.
A similar landslide occurred in the Mawchi area last year, resulting in deaths and property damage.
In addition to these natural disasters, Mawchi has endured repeated airstrikes throughout 2025, causing further civilian casualties and destruction during the monsoon season.
