Resistance forces have freed hundreds of civilian prisoners from a regime camp in Hpasawng Township in southern Karenni State, where fighting has been ongoing for the past couple of months.

“We do not know how long they have been kept captive,” stated Tar Eh Soe,  communications officer for the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF). He said they rescued over 200 civilians from the Burma army’s Infantry Battalion 134 mountain village camp in the township. They were safely escorted to a secure area.

In late March, the resistance successfully rescued over 100 people from the Kwet Thit Buddhist monastery in Hpasawng town. These individuals had been used as human shields by the regime during clashes, highlighting the regime’s violations of international law, as pointed out by Tar Eh Soe.

Although the resistance forces have seized many positions held by IB-134, there are still more to be taken, and fighting continues in the town, he said.

The enemy utilizes drones during the day to target their locations, forcing fighters to limit their movements until nightfall. The regime also continues to conduct airstrikes, resulting in injuries and fatalities among civilians. However, the exact number of casualties is currently unknown.
