Eight civilians, including school-age children, were killed in military junta attacks across Karenni State in October, according to data compiled by the Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG).

A total of 28 civilians, including men, women, and children, were injured in the attacks, according to the Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG).

The victims included one woman who was killed in an artillery attack and one child who died in a drone bombing. Three men and three children were also killed in separate airstrikes, the report said.
The injured included 17 men, five women and six children, according to the Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG).

Karenni National Women’s Organization (KNWO) Chairperson Maw Phray Myar commented on attacks on schools and the deaths of children caused by junta strikes.

“The main point is that accountability is needed to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future, and that children’s lives and safety must also be protected immediately now. A school should not be a place where children live in fear. It should be a place where they can study safely and build their future. Protecting children’s lives and their right to education is a shared responsibility of the international community, groups on the ground and all stakeholders,” Mo Phray Myar said.

In addition to the civilian casualties, reports indicated that homes, vehicles, farmland and schools were damaged in the attacks.

KnHRG said some schools have been temporarily closed because of the deaths of school-age children in junta air and drone bomb attacks, and because students and teachers no longer feel psychologically safe.
