Residents at an IDP site in western Hpruso Township, Karenni State, have been paying up to 2,000 kyat for a single egg for more than two months now, with prices showing no sign of dropping, according to a local woman.
When the junta’s military launched an offensive into Hpruso Township in early May, transportation routes were blocked, and poor road conditions during the rainy season have made transporting goods difficult, driving up prices for eggs and other basic food items.
Because the main roads near the military’s advance route remain unusable, goods must still be carried by hand along rough tracks, and the resulting rise in transport costs is another reason egg prices have yet to drop.
“Without roads, it’s like being cut off. Having to carry things by hand ourselves is what pushes prices up. It’s partly tied to the military advance too. We have to go far out of our way to avoid them, so the roads are bad. When it rains, the roads get slippery and impassable,” said a woman shop owner.
She added that in western Demoso Township, where most goods are purchased, a single egg costs 800 kyat.
At the IDP site, three eggs cost 5,000 kyat and are even more expensive than in Hpasawng Township and the Mawchi area, which typically have some of the highest prices in Karenni State.
In the Mawchi area, 8 eggs can cost 10,000 kyat, while at the IDP site, 6 eggs cost 10,000 kyat. The IDP site reportedly has around 300 residents.
Since the military coup in Myanmar, rising costs driven by inflation, along with restrictions on imports of poultry feedstock, breeding chickens, and medicine needed for the poultry farming industry, have affected egg production and prices nationwide. Since July 2026, new import-export policies introduced by coup leader Min Aung Hlaing, who has since adopted a civilian government guise, have pushed the price of a single egg to around 700 kyat across Myanmar.
