More than 10 homes were destroyed by junta forces during July in Karenni State and Kayan areas, according to figures from the Progressive Karenni People’s Force (PKPF).
The damage came from heavy and small-arms fire, torching, fires that broke out during clashes, and airstrikes and drone bomb attacks.
As the years since the military coup drag on, damage to civilian homes has kept rising, and displaced people say the losses are taking a mental toll. One displaced woman from Karenni State said: “We don’t have a house anymore. Our whole family compound — my house, my younger sister’s house, my younger brother’s house — all three are gone now. The military burned them all down. It took so much hard work to build even one house… It really hurts.”
On the other hand, religious buildings and clinics were also damaged, PKPF said.
PKPF’s report, released August 5, states that over five years of junta attacks across Myanmar — including Karenni State — have now destroyed 3,413 homes in Karenni State and Kayan areas combined. By township, Loikaw saw the most damage with 985 homes destroyed, while Bawlakale had the fewest, with 43.
