Seven Civilians Killed in a Month Due to Human Rights Violations by the Military in Karenni State, Says KnHRG

According to a statement released by the Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG), seven civilians were killed within one month in Karenni State due to human rights violations committed by the military junta during February.

The seven victims included three men, three women, and one child.

“There was the case where a pregnant woman died due to artillery shelling at an IDP camp in Bawlakhe. That’s why, in our report, we recorded it as including the unborn child in her womb,” said Ma May, Director of KnHRG.

Among the seven civilian deaths, one woman was killed in an airstrike in the Mawchi area. In Pekhon and Bawlakhe, one man, one woman, and one child were killed by artillery shelling. In eastern Demoso Township, one man was killed in a drone bombing. One man was arrested and killed. In Loikaw, one woman died after stepping on a landmine.

In addition to the deaths, a total of 17 civilians were injured, including seven men, two women, three children, and five people whose gender could not be identified.

During February, the military carried out a total of 24 incidents of human rights violations in areas where civilians were present. These included five airstrikes, ten artillery attacks, four drone attacks, one arrest, one deliberate mine explosion, and three incidents of civilians stepping on landmines, according to the KnHRG statement.
