Some schools operating in Demoso (East) Township, Karenni State, have been temporarily closed due to fears of air attacks by the military junta, a township education officer said.
Since September 7, several schools have been closed because of the security situation, and depending on how conditions develop, the closures could last up to about a week, the officer said.
Prolonged school closures risk affecting children’s learning, and when schools reopen, students may find it harder to refocus on their studies, the Demoso (East) Township education officer said.
“Right now, because of the security concerns over air attack warnings, we’re already seeing it with the children — once school is closed, instead of studying at home in the evenings, they end up going online or playing games instead. Given this, if a school closure lasts more than a week, it becomes difficult for us to get these children to refocus on their studies afterward,” he said.
Residents say they are worried about their security this September, as the junta has been carrying out air and bomb attacks, drone bombings, and aircraft and drone reconnaissance flights in Loikaw, Hsomo PraySoeLay (Shadaw), Hpruso, Maw Chi area in Pasaung Township, and Demoso Township in Karenni State.
Because of these air attack threats and the security situation, schools in Karenni State have had to close temporarily and repeatedly during the current 2026–27 academic year, creating difficulties for students’ education, according to residents. There have also been cases in Karenni State where school buildings were damaged in air and drone strikes, forcing some schools to close temporarily.
Demoso (East) Township is known to have more than 30 schools.
