PHRUSO, Karenni State — An outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting has hit an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in the eastern part of Phruso Township, Karenni State, affecting children and elderly residents in recent days, a displaced woman told Kantarawaddy Times.

“Both adults and children are suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting. We don’t know whether it’s related to the water or the weather,” she said.

The outbreak began around April 5, when approximately 20 people — including children and adults — first fell ill, according to residents.

The camp is also grappling with a shortage of clean drinking water, compounding the health crisis in the area.

Residents expressed concern that cases could continue to rise, with medicines already in short supply. “It’s worrying, because we’re struggling to get medicines,” one displaced woman said.
The camp has no healthcare workers on site, forcing the sick to seek treatment at nearby villages or other IDP camps.

More than 400 displaced people are currently sheltering at the camp.
