Ko Kwoy Village, located in the western part of Pruso Township, Karenni State, experienced a landslide caused by heavy rainfall on September 10, 2024. As a result, the entire village was forced to relocate to a new site.

Although it has been more than a year and a half since their relocation, the villagers are still in need of various forms of assistance

According to a local schoolteacher, children continue to face difficulties in their studies due to a shortage of roofing materials and notebooks for the village’s school.

“The roofing materials we received last month were not enough. Half of the school is covered with tarpaulin sheets, while the other half has a tin roof. Since the tarpaulin is attached to the tin sheets and our school is situated on a hill, strong winds often tear the tarpaulin apart. During heavy rain, the entire classroom becomes wet” the teacher explained.

The primary school located at the newly relocated Ko Kwoy Village, the lack of adequate roofing continues to cause problems, leaving students soaked during class time while raining. The teacher added that they urgently need to repair the school building, especially as the rainy season persists.

They are still in need of assistance as the road leading into the village was blocked by the landslide, making it difficult to transport essential materials.

“We still haven’t been able to dismantle the old school. We need to transport the building materials once it is dismantled, but since the road was destroyed by the landslide, transportation has become impossible” the teacher explained.

Currently, Ko Kwoy Village consists of 28 local households and 19 internally displaced households, with a total population of more than 200 people. Over 50 children are attending classes taught by six teachers.
