Bawlake, Karenni State — Residents in Bawlake town are increasingly relying on bartering to meet their daily food needs as shortages worsen, according to a local man.

“Instead of buying with cash, it’s easier for us to exchange goods. For example, those who have cattle trade them for rice, while others barter chickens or crops from their gardens,” he explained.

Supply routes into Bawlake have been blocked for more than two years due to ongoing clashes, cutting off the normal flow of goods. Meanwhile, junta troops stationed in the town reportedly receive food supplies via military helicopters, which are then resold in limited quantities to civilians.

“Although trade routes have collapsed, some basic foodstuffs are still sold in restricted amounts through the military,” the local resident said.

However, many civilians are unable to purchase these goods due to lack of income and jobs, residents added.

Currently, only a small number of ordinary civilians remain in Bawlake town alongside junta troops and their affiliates. Kantarawaddy Times is still working to confirm the exact population figures.

Bawlake has also been designated as one of the constituencies where the military council plans to hold its initial round of elections on December 28.
