Challenges in Supporting Teachers at a Self-Reliant Community School in Moe Bye

A volunteer assisting internally displaced people (IDPs) reported that a self-reliant community school in the Moe Bye IDP camp, located along the Karenni-Shan border, is facing difficulties in providing financial support for its teachers and volunteers.

The school relies on contributions from parents to cover the stipends of the teachers and staff.

“We opened this self-reliant community school, but it’s been challenging to pay the stipends for our volunteer teachers each month. Currently, we have to collect contributions from the parents to provide support for the teachers,” explained the volunteer teacher.

The school offers classes from kindergarten to grade five, serving over 80 students with the help of six teachers.

Due to the ongoing reliance on parents’ contributions to sustain the teachers’ support, the volunteer stressed the need for long-term donors and organizations to step in and provide sustainable assistance.
