The Karenni State Consultative Council (KSCC) will draft an education policy that’s in line with a federal democracy. Discussions are currently taking place with the education department of the interim National Unity Government and various other organisations in Karenni State.
“Both education and health are very important,” said Khu Palu Reh of KSCC. He explained that they’re just starting to work on a unified plan for schools, but that this is something that needs to happen.
Earlier in November, KSCC appointed seven members for its Karenni Education Committee (KEC) to work with other organisations to come up with a policy for the whole country and a specific one for the state.
NUG promised to provide KEC with everything it needs to fulfil its mission, especially to help the many students affected by the Burma Army offensives and the conflict with resistance groups in the state.
Although many schools have recently reopened, there aren’t enough materials and not enough teachers for all the students being taught in the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in the jungle and in villages.
“Because of COVID-19 outbreaks and the clashes, it’s still difficult to travel in Karenni State. We’re discussing opening more schools… We need time. Despite the challenges we face, our youth need education,” said Khu Palu Reh.
