On September 21, an artillery shell fired by junta troops struck Wari Su Pa Laing village, near the Shan-Karenni border in Mobye Township, killing a woman around 50 years old, according to a resident familiar with the incident.
The woman had returned to the village from an IDP camp around 4 p.m. that afternoon to collect firewood when she was struck by the artillery fire.
“It hit yesterday afternoon around 4 o’clock. The woman who died has already been taken back to the IDP camp where she was staying. Just last week, an older woman was also injured when shells hit inside the village too. Artillery shells land in the village fairly often,” a resident said.
Residents say that although junta troops have not advanced close to Wari Su Pa Laing village, artillery shelling in the area happens frequently.
Clashes between junta forces and resistance forces broke out in Mobye on September 13, and residents say drone and scouting flights now occur daily in the area.
Due to the junta’s ongoing artillery and drone attacks, the Mobye People’s Defense Force (PDF) has warned residents against traveling through Lwe Wine, the foothills of Lwe Yin mountain, and Khaung Sam Road routes on the western side of Mobye town, all of which have been closed for security reasons.
