According to a statement released today, December 9, by the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU), at least 51 women were killed across Myanmar in November due to human rights violations committed by the junta. The casualties include one woman from Karenni State.

BWU reports that 37 of the women were killed in junta airstrikes, the highest cause of death for the month. Another 10 women were killed by heavy artillery fire, while 4 were victims of extrajudicial killings.

Among the 51 female victims, six were girls under the age of 18, the statement noted.
A local woman from Karenni State expressed concern about the increasing number of children affected by the military’s abuses.

“When it comes to human rights, we no longer have any of the rights we should have. Children, in particular, are being denied many basic rights such as education and healthcare. Not only are they being deprived of these rights, but seeing children die under military rule is extremely heartbreaking,” a local woman from Karenni State said.

By region, the casualties included one woman from Karenni State, 11 from Sagaing Region, 9 from Mandalay Region, 16 from Rakhine State, 3 from Kachin State, 2 from Bago Region, 1 from Karen State, 3 from Magway Region, 2 from Tanintharyi Region, and 3 from Shan State. Rakhine State recorded the highest number of female fatalities for the month.

In addition to the fatalities, 57 women were injured nationwide during the month of November.
The Karenni Human Rights Group (KnHRG) reported on December 3 that 16 civilians were killed in November in Karenni state and along Karenni–Shan border area as a result of various human rights violations committed by the junta. The victims included 12 men, 3 women, and 1 child.
