Karenni students enrolled in distance education programs at Taunggyi University in Shan State will now be required to attend tutorial classes and sit for examinations for the 2025 academic year at Loikaw University, according to the junta-controlled Ministry of Education.
The announcement, published in the Myanma Alinn newspaper on October 7, stated that Loikaw University will reopen, and students studying outside the state must take their exams within Karenni State.
A resident of Loikaw expressed concern over the directive, saying, “For students who are living and working in southern Shan, this will be quite difficult.”
For the 2025 academic year, distance education students from the second and third intakes are scheduled to attend on-campus tutorial sessions and examinations at Loikaw University beginning October 13.
According to Voice of Myanmar, the second intake’s tutorial sessions will be held from October 13 to 22, followed by examinations from October 24 to 30. The third intake’s tutorials will take place from November 1 to 11, with exams scheduled from November 13 to 21.
Loikaw University sustained significant damage and was forced to close during the heavy military offensives in 2023. Local residents reported that over the past two years, the junta administration has been repairing the campus and is now preparing to reopen the institution.
