Farmers in the Pruso and Dee Maw Hso township of Karenni State are facing growing difficulties as rice seedlings in many of their fields have failed to thrive as expected, according to Ko Jin Nary, a local rice seed coordinator.

“We even broadcast more seeds than usual—like a full basket or more for each plot—but still, the germination rate is really low. It’s just not enough,” he said.

Despite using quality and certified rice seed varieties, farmers have been struggling with poor seedling establishment for two consecutive years. The cause of the problem remains uncertain.

“We’re not sure whether it’s the weather or pest-related, but based on what we’ve seen, pests are likely playing a major role,” he added.

Farmers in both Dee Maw Hso and Pruso typically cultivate their rice paddies twice a year—during the summer and rainy seasons. However, the recent decline in seedling survival has disrupted this cycle for two consecutive years, placing additional strain on rural livelihoods that rely on rice farming as a primary source of food and income.
