A member of an IDP camp committee has reported that IDPs and local residents in the western part of Hpruso Township, Karenni State, are experiencing asthma symptoms. These symptoms are particularly prevalent during the rainy and winter seasons.

“Both locals and IDPs are experiencing these issues, with respiratory problems being the most common. This is primarily because the areas is cold, and many people sleep near fires, inhaling a significant amount of smoke. When children get sick, they often require substantial oxygen in the hospital. We’ve also observed an increase in these cases among adults,” said a committee member from one of the displacement camps.

Asthma symptoms are more prevalent among children under the age of five. Last April, the committee member added that a child died from asthma.

“Children under five are most affected. They often require five days of intravenous antibiotics and respiratory medications in the hospital, sometimes lasting up to two weeks. Adults, depending on the severity of their condition, may require two to three weeks of treatment,” stated the committee member.

A female CDM nurse explained that asthma can be triggered by allergies, respiratory infections, occupational exposure, inhalation of smoke and haze, air pollution and obesity.

“The impact of respiratory problems depends on the severity of the asthma symptoms. Without proper medication and treatment, asthma can lead to respiratory failure and death,” she asserted.

A member of the IDP camp committee mentioned that asthma are more common during the winter and raining seasons. Last year, they faced a shortage of hospital beds and medication due to the severity of the situation.

In the western part of Hpruso Township, during the rainy and winter seasons, it tends to be colder. It is reported that local residents and IDPs in the area are in need of warm clothing, blankets, and medicine.
