Nearly 100 malaria cases — affecting both children and adults — have been recorded among villagers and internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the western part of Phruso Township, Karenni State, from May through June 12, according to a female health worker providing medical care in the area.
“Malaria cases occur almost every month, but from May to June 12, the numbers have risen significantly,” she said.
While some medicines have been provided by relevant organizations in response to the surge in malaria infections, supplies remain insufficient. The health worker stressed that insecticide-treated mosquito nets and additional medicines are urgently needed to prevent further spread of the disease.
“Many more medicines are needed. Since people are living in a malaria-endemic area, they also need mosquito repellent during the daytime. Cases are now spreading across all age groups, which is very concerning,” she added.
Malaria infections occur every rainy season, and children under five are also among those affected, she noted.
The affected area is home to more than 2,000 residents and displaced persons.
