Fuel prices have risen sharply across multiple areas in Karenni State following supply shortages, local residents said.

In western Demoso Township, residents began experiencing fuel shortages after March 3, and prices increased significantly within three weeks. Across different areas, gasoline and diesel prices have nearly doubled, according to locals.

In Demoso town, gasoline prices rose from 3,500 kyats per liter to around 9,000 kyats. In Mawchi, prices increased from 8,000 kyats to between 10,000 and 15,000 kyats per liter. In Hsibu, prices surged from 3,500 kyats to around 10,000 kyats, while in Ywarthit, gasoline prices rose from 6,000 kyats to approximately 9,000 kyats per liter. In Loikaw, prices increased from 3,500 kyats to around 5,000 kyats per liter.

Rising fuel prices have begun to affect business operations and have contributed to an increase in commodity prices, residents said.

“Since fuel prices went up, people are going out less. There are fewer customers in the market, and people are hesitant to buy what they need,” said a shop owner. “They are deciding whether to spend money on fuel or on essential goods.”

The military council has stated that the current situation requires strict conservation of water, fuel, and electricity.

Following escalating conflict in the Middle East, global oil prices have increased, affecting multiple countries. Authorities have also announced rising fuel prices in neighboring Thailand.

After nearly a month of conflict in the Middle East, reports indicate that former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—through which about one-fifth of global oil supply passes—but Iran has yet to respond.
