Teachers are increasingly proposing to transfer to other townships as they don’t want to work under the junta’s administration in Loikaw, Karenni State, according to sources close to the education sector.
The junta has been preparing to reopen schools in Loikaw in June, urging teachers to return to their positions. However, many teachers have been proposing to leave the town and transfer to work in other townships.
“We cannot simply say that fighting has stopped. The junta is urging teachers to return to work when schools reopen, but many of them don’t want to work in Loikaw. So they are transferring to other schools,” said a non-CDM teacher who wished to remain anonymous.
The junta has reportedly instructed teachers to return to Loikaw before the start of the school year. The junta’s Ministry of Education has set the enrollment period for the entire country from May 23rd to June 2nd, which has already started.
Junta-controlled media has reported that enrollment is currently taking place at Loikaw High School No. (1). The junta plans to reopen schools nationwide on June 3rd.
In Karenni State, Loikaw High School No. (1) and Loikaw High School No. (5) are the only two high schools currently operating under the junta’s control, according to local residents.
Fighting is currently ongoing in Loikaw between junta troops and resistance forces vying for control of their territories.
