Expectant mothers in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Hpruso Township, Karenni State, face challenges accessing essential food and medicine.

“We need 2-3 types of medicines, but affording them is difficult. Sometimes, we can only buy one kind,” shared an anonymous pregnant woman from Indaw IDP camp. She explained that women who recently gave birth need hot water and showers, but boiling water is a challenge due to limited wood.

Among the 800 camp residents, 15 are expecting mothers. Displaced by ongoing conflict between the State Administration Council and resistance forces, they endure harsh conditions, particularly in the cold January nights, affecting their sleep. This also impacts the elderly residents. These factors contribute to widespread illness, exacerbated by a lack of funds for medical care.

A nameless volunteer supporting them emphasized the importance of hospital births to avoid complications, as giving birth at home can lead to menorrhagia and underweight babies. However, financial constraints hinder access to medical assistance.

The IDPs depend on donations but the support has dried up for Hpruso Township. According to the pregnant woman, mothers and toddlers received nutrient powder once every three months but now no one comes to help them.
