The Kayah State Teachers’ Union says it’s provided over $130k to 2,798 teachers and other employees who’ve joined the civil disobedience movement (CDM) against the military regime in Karenni State.
The money for education workers who refused to work under the dictatorship was distributed over four periods: $16k in the first round, $3k in the second, $59k during the third and $51k in the fourth.
According to an anonymous member of the Kayah State Teachers’ Union, they wanted to give $27 to each CDMer, as they’re called in Burma, who’re employed in education departments, but some people have gone into hiding and cannot be traced at the moment.
”To date, we’ve not been able to reach some of the teachers.”
He said almost all of the 2,798 teachers who’ve joined the CDM in Loikaw, Demawso, Hpruso, Maese, Hpasoung, Bawlakhe, Shardaw and Pekong townships have received the money, explaining that pregnant women, new mothers who’re still breastfeeding, sick and displaced people have been given priority.
“We received some of the donations from private donors and got nothing from the National Unity Government or the Karenni State Consultative Council. The Committee Representing Parliament Hluttaw donated $2.7k,” he said.
From April to June, many CDM teachers in Karenni State have returned to work under the military regime.
