In Dee Maw Hso Township, Karenni State, residents report that several market stalls inside the main public market have had their roofs dismantled or stolen.

On April 20, members of the interim administrative council for the urban ward of Dee Maw Hso Township, accompanied by local residents, conducted a field inspection of the town. During their visit to the central market, they discovered that roofs of several publicly-owned stalls had been removed and stolen.

“When we went around for inspection, we visited the market area too. What we saw there was disheartening. Some stalls still had roofs, while others didn’t. Even some houses had missing roofs. Initially, only a few stalls were affected, but now the extent of the damage has significantly increased,” said the chairman of the interim administrative council for Dee Maw Hso urban ward.

To prevent further theft or damage to public property in Dee Maw Hso, the interim executive council stated that it is developing and implementing measures in collaboration with local defense units.

“We initiated the inspection because public property—including office supplies and equipment—had already gone missing. We want to ensure this doesn’t continue. Together with local battalions and units, we will issue regulations and raise awareness among the community,” the chairman added.

Residents of Dee Maw Hso’s urban ward have been displaced since May 2021, when fighting first broke out in Karenni State following the military coup. The interim administrative council overseeing Dee Maw Hso urban ward is reportedly formed by representatives from the Myoma village tract, Dee Kyae village tract, and Ngwe Taung village tract.
