Since the final week of May, continuous heavy rainfall across various parts of Karenni State has caused serious transportation challenges for truck vehicle traveling along the Dee Maw Hso–Maw Chi route. Overflowing streams and worsening road conditions have severely impacted those transporting goods along this corridor.

“The stream’s water level has already risen, and even now, many people remain stranded on the opposite riverbank. Our vehicle managed to cross by using large water containers to help it float across the river. We couldn’t use the boat to transport the vehicle, as the river was too narrow and the current too strong—making it impossible to carry anything over. We had to use tarps to shield the truck during the crossing. As a result, the goods were left behind on the other side, and we had to walk back on foot. On the lower riverbank, we were able to use a small boat to cross later on” said a truck driver.

The driver explained that he had to spend five nights on the road just to reach Maw Chi from Dee Maw Hso. Some freight trucks are reportedly still unable to travel the route as of now.

Because of thick mud after the rain, trucks cannot pass certain sections of the road and must rely on tractors to tow them. Depending on the truck size, the cost of towing a truck over a 100-foot distance range from 100,000 to 400,000 MMK, he added.

“In some areas, we’ve been able to manage using chains. But it’s still difficult during the rainy season when we have to transport goods. Honestly, it’s really tough to work under these conditions,” the driver continued.

Every year during the rainy season, travel along the Dee Maw Hso–Maw Chi route faces delays due to transportation difficulties. Local residents are now calling on authorities to repair key access roads along the route.
