Strong winds are one of the most common natural disasters. In Myanmar, they often occur during the pre-monsoon months of April and May, as well as the post-monsoon period from October to December.

As temperatures rise, water vapor accumulates that can form clouds. This can lead to atmospheric instability, strong winds, hailstorms, and unseasonal rainfall.

During April and May, high daytime temperatures can cause cumulonimbus clouds to form in the afternoon and evening. According to the Meteorology and Hydrology Department under the military junta, surface-level winds can reach speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour during this period.

According to Meteoblue’s Seasonal Forecast, the following regions, including Karenni State, Ayeyarwady, Yangon, Bago, Naypyidaw, Mandalay, southern and eastern Shan State, Karen State (Kayin State), Mon State, and Tanintharyi, may typically experience above-average rainfall between 0.4 to 0.8 inches in April.

In May, which marks the early monsoon period, Karenni State is expected to receive 1 to 1.5 inches more rainfall than usual.

Strong winds and hailstorms can cause severe damage, including destruction of homes and buildings, broken trees, damaged power lines and poles, and injuries to people and livestock.

On March 21, sudden heavy rainfall and strong winds destroyed 20 houses in an internally displaced person (IDP) camp in western DeeMawHso. In addition, local residents’ homes and stored rice supplies were damaged.

While seasonal weather patterns can be predicted, they cannot be prevented. Therefore, it is crucial to learn from past weather changes and prepare as much as possible.

To mitigate the dangers posed by strong winds, residents in open areas should reinforce their homes against strong winds. If there are trees near their homes that could potentially fall, they should install support structures such as stakes or poles to prevent damage caused by falling branches.

Roofs and protective structures should be strengthened to prevent them from being blown away. Given that high winds can cause trees and branches near homes to fall, it is important to clear them in advance.

Inside the home, it is essential to secure any objects that could collapse, break, or fall to prevent injuries or further damage. Flammable materials should be carefully checked and stored properly to reduce fire risks. Additionally, emergency supplies and important documents should be kept close at hand to ensure quick access in case of an emergency.

During strong winds, it is safer to stay away from windows and doors, as broken glass could become a serious threat. Objects outside, including loose debris and other materials, can be carried by the wind and cause injuries or destruction, so it is recommended to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

If the winds are extremely strong, seeking shelter under a strong table or another solid structure is recommended. Unless it is an emergency, it is recommended to try to avoid using phones.

During hailstorms or thunderstorms, one should stay away from open fields and exposed areas, such as farms or playgrounds. If possible, staying indoors would be the best choice. However, if it is necessary to go outside, wearing a hard helmet like a motorcycle helmet and thick clothing can provide additional safety.

Electrical appliances such as televisions and radios should be turned off temporarily to prevent potential damage or accidents. Staying away from trees, electric poles, or metal structures is also important, as these can attract lightning strikes. Since mobile phones and metal objects can conduct electricity, using or carrying them during a storm should be avoided.

After the storm has passed, community members should work together with responsible authorities to clear debris and restore affected areas. If anyone sustains injuries, they should seek medical assistance immediately. Those in need of temporary shelter should reach out to the relevant officials to request support.

Due to frequent temperature fluctuations, there is a high risk of lightning hazards. It is important to monitor weather updates regularly and follow safety measures accordingly.
