Karenni State, Myanmar – Myanmar military forces based in Demoso Township have been frequently shelling the western part of the township in recent days.

On the morning of June 30, at least seven artillery shells were fired into western Demoso, despite no fighting being reported in the area.

“They fired three shells first, and then about half an hour later, they launched four more. Some didn’t explode,” a local resident told Kantarawaddy Times.

Kantarawaddy Times has not been able to independently verify whether there have been any civilian casualties or property damage as a result of the shelling.

“They’ve been firing shells continuously since last week. On Friday night (June 27), I heard three explosions around 11 p.m. I don’t know exactly where they landed. I’m really worried for the children — they’re even more scared than we are,” said one local woman.

Two battalions of the Myanmar military — Infantry Battalion 102 and Light Infantry Battalion 427 — are stationed in Demoso Township.

In addition to the artillery strikes, frequent flights by military reconnaissance aircraft have heightened fear and anxiety among the local population.
