Burma Army soldiers sustained injures when a Karenni ethnic armed organisation (EAO) ambushed them in Karenni State (aka Kayah) on Thursday, May 27, eyewitnesses told Kantarawaddy Times.
A spokesperson for Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) said fighting on the Maphyu to Mawchi road, in Hpasaung township, at 2pm, was over quickly. Transportation, however, was blocked for the entire day. “We captured their backpacks and army hats,” the spokesperson explained.
Locals said the fighting lasted 15 minutes. “Some people saw injured soldiers when the Burma Army retreated,” a resident from Hpasaung town said.
Thursday’s attack is the second time KNPP engaged with Tatmadaw—as Burma Army are locally called—since the February 1 coup. The EAO fought with Tatmadaw on May 20.
