Kayan National University Opens to Provide Higher Education and International Learning Opportunities

The Kayan National University, managed by the Kayan National Education Committee, officially opened on August 6th, in a ceremony held in location within a Kayan region.

This university aims to provide higher education and international learning opportunities for Kayan youth who have completed basic education.

Dr. Thein Lwin, an advisor to the Kayan National Education Committee, explained, “We have already established nine high schools in Kayan region, with over 900 students enrolled. There is a growing need for a university in the Kayan region to cater to the higher education aspirations of young people who have completed their basic education. Furthermore, we require an institution to study the unique Kayan culture, history, language, geography, geology, anthropology, and other distinctive features of the Kayan region. This Kayan National University is not only for those living in Kayan territory but also a place for students from across the nation to learn and grow.”

The Kayan National Education Committee was formed in 2022 under the leadership of the Kayan New Land Party (KNLP). The committee have established 145 basic education schools in Kayan region, with a student population of 13,000, supported by 1,000 teachers.

The opening of the Kayan National University provides a pathway for graduates of basic education to pursue higher education.

The university will offer six subjects: Teacher Training, Agriculture, Health, Development and Social Sciences, Computer Science, and Kayan Literature and Language. Additionally, the university plans to expand its offerings to include subjects in the natural sciences, economics, law, and urban planning.

The Kayan National University is actively collaborating with partner ethnic universities, national universities, and international universities.

The Kayan National Education Committee extends an invitation to Kayan intellectuals, scholars, and experts from both within and outside the country, regardless of ethnicity, to collaborate with the university, as it strives to foster that will produce the human resoureces of diverse communities, including the Kayan people.
