It was reported that the Karenni Resistance Forces successfully captured the Yay Kyaw military base in Bawlake on August 8, 2024.
According to the Karenni Army’s (KA) 5th Battalion Commander Khon Plawree, the effort to capture the Yay Kyaw base was made possible after the successful capture of the Mae Sa Long Mountain military base.
“The base is between Mae Sa Long and Bawlake, at Yay Kyaw. The attack began at 7:50 a.m. this morning. After we captured the Mae Sa Long military base, we paused at Yay Kyaw. The junta troops were planning to establish a base there, but we launched our attack this morning to take it over,” said Khon Plawree.
Following the capture of the Mae Sa Long military base—one of the main military bases in Bawlake District—on June 25 by the Karenni resistance forces, the junta troops from that base relocated to the Yay Kyaw military base. The 505th Battalion of the junta’s 2nd Division was stationed at the base.
After the battle, the Karenni resistance forces found five dead junta soldiers and seized weapons and ammunition, Khon Plawree added. He also mentioned that the remaining troops retreated towards Bawlake and may regroup for a counterattack.
