The Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State has started issuing vehicle license plates and driver’s licenses for residents, according to a statement from the council.
Due to the current transitional period, driver’s licenses and license plates are being issued in areas controlled by revolutionary forces and in regions under IEC administration. U L Phaung Sho, chief of the IEC’s Department of Commerce, Investment, and Transportation, explained in an interview with Kantarawaddy Times: “Our IEC offices have initially begun processing driver’s licenses within the state, and gradually the service is becoming more widely available. Some local residents have already started receiving their licenses under our administration.”
Currently, licenses are being issued for driving within the state, with plans to connect other units and states to enable future coordination with the Union government.
U L Phaung Sho also mentioned that, due to the large influx of people who have sought refuge in Karenni State during the revolution, driver’s licenses and license plates will also be issued for those individuals from outside the state.
“In cases of lost property or vehicle theft, if a registered vehicle is involved, we can collaborate with the Karenni State Police to trace it. We’re working to ensure public responsibility and accountability, and our interim council is committed to supporting the people by operating as a government,” said U Phaung Sho.
The IEC’s Department of Commerce, Investment, and Transportation is also currently handling tax collection, road and bridge maintenance and construction, company registrations, business licensing, motor vehicle registrations, and issuing vehicle license plates.
