According to IDPs at Thayar Kone (2) Camp in Deemawso Township, Karenni State, they are facing a severe shortage of drinking water. The pond they depend on for water is running dry, and the water is contaminated due to livestock entering the pond. They are in desperate need of assistance with clean drinking water.
“We are using this water and recently many people, both adults and children, have been experiencing diarrhea. It could be due to this water or the weather. Children who bathe in this water also experience itching,” said a female IDP.
Over half of the IDP population at Thayar Kone (2) Camp experienced diarrhea in recent months. Local residents say the main causes are the hot weather and contaminated drinking water.
Although they are hoping for rain to provide clean water, they are currently in urgent need of immediate drinking water assistance.
A local healthcare provider expressed her concerns about the potential health risks associated with drinking contaminated water.
“It can lead to diarrhea, kidney stones, and skin rashes,” she said.
The current water source is contaminated due to the frequent entry of livestock into the pond, making the water taste and smell unpleasant.
Villagers and IDPs in the area are forced to buy expensive water for drinking. Thayar Kone Camp currently houses over 200 people in 70 homes.
