Following the breach of the Moe Byel Dam, residents, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), residing in villages and farmlands along the Balu Chaung Creek have been further displaced and are in urgent need of shelter, according to a member of the Karenni IDPs Relief Network.

Approximately 150 households, comprising around 1,200 people from villages such as Wee Thet Kue, Poung Taw, Pa Yar Phyu, Pa Yar Ni, and others along the Balu Chaung River in the Moe Bye-Dee Maw Hso border area, have been relocated due to the flooding since July 16th.

“The primary need is for tarpaulins. While some managed to bring their old tarps, they are no longer reusable. Others couldn’t transport their shelters at all, forcing them to share existing ones, which is not feasible. The large number of people necessitates additional tarpaulins. Secondly, we urgently need portable toilets as many were submerged during the flooding. Rebuilding toilets and shelters is critical,” said a member of the Karenni IDP Relief Network.

The estimated 150 displaced households require tarpaulins, portable toilets, medicine, and dry rations. Currently, both local residents and displaced IDPs are seeking refuge with relatives or in other nearby IDP camps due to the ongoing flooding.

Education is another pressing concern. The children need educational materials and books to continue their studies in their new locations.

“The children need educational materials. Currently, three schools are flooded. We are teaching children in areas that aren’t flooded, but due to the large number of students, we have to split the classes into morning and afternoon sessions. We require teaching aids and books,” the member said.

No assistance has yet been received for these flood-affected IDPs. As of July 31st, the water level has not receded, and the submerged paddy fields remain inundated.
