Loikaw Technological University, located in a revolutionary-controlled area of Karenni State, has officially opened admissions for the 2025–2026 academic year, according to sources.
In previous years, the university admitted around 20 students who had passed the 2020 university matriculation exam and were from within Karenni State.
This year, however, the university coordinator, Ma Ree, told Kantarawaddy Times that admissions will extend beyond local youth to include applicants from other states and regions who meet the eligibility requirements and have passed exams between the 2020 and 2023 academic years.
“Last year, we only accepted students from within the state who had passed the 2020 matriculation exam. This year, we are expanding the opportunity to students from other regions and states as well,” the coordinator explained.
Eligible applicants must have passed the 2020 matriculation exam, completed the Basic Education Completion Assessment (BECA), or participated in the ethnic education program’s basic education exams between 2020 and 2023. GED and IGCSE certificate holders will also be considered.
The university offers four engineering majors: Urban Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. A total of 80 students will be admitted for the upcoming academic year.
Prospective students are required to sit for an entrance examination. Those who pass will then undergo an in-person interview and screening process.
As the university operates on the ground in a conflict-affected area, only students who are genuinely committed to attending will be accepted. Dual enrollment at another university is not permitted.
The university will continue to implement a blended learning model, combining both in-person and online instruction, as in previous years. Applications are open from May 1 to May 31.
Regarding the challenges faced in operating the university on the ground, the university coordinator, Ma Ree, shared the following:
“Last year, we struggled to provide basic necessities such as desks and chairs for students. We also lacked essential office supplies and were unable to offer sufficient support to our teaching staff. This year, in addition to those ongoing difficulties, the increase in student intake has created further challenges—particularly with constructing temporary classroom buildings.”
Detailed information about the university and the application process is available on the official social media page of the institution, IUC TU-Loikaw, where prospective applicants can make inquiries and submit their applications.
