In Somo Pray Soe Leh (also known as Shan Daw) town in Karenni State, the number of pregnant women is reportedly rising, and many are facing serious challenges during childbirth due to poor road conditions in the rainy season. These women must travel long distances to reach clinics located far from their villages, and both mothers and babies face heightened risks during the transfer due to difficult and unsafe travel conditions.

A health worker in Somo Pray Soe Leh Township explained that patient transfers have become increasingly difficult during the rainy season, as vehicles often cannot reach the villages due to muddy and impassable roads.

“Some pregnant women require urgent transfer to clinics, but getting to the clinic is extremely difficult. We don’t have access to reliable transportation, and during the rainy season, the roads become even worse,” said the health worker.

Currently, the clinic is accommodating around 20 pregnant women. The health worker added that the medical staff are doing their best to provide close monitoring and support to ensure safe pregnancies.

“There has been an increase in pregnancies in Shan Daw. Pregnant patients come in regularly for check-ups. We provide monthly appointments, and for those nearing delivery, we monitor their condition every two weeks. We’re doing our best to provide proper care and support,” she added.
In late September 2024, a tragic incident occurred when a newborn died—a case believed to have been preventable if adequate medical care had been available in time.

Somo Pray Soe Leh Township has been under the full control of resistance forces for over a year. However, the region still lacks sufficient trained medical professionals and essential supplies needed to provide proper healthcare for both local residents and displaced populations.
