On September 5th, the military junta conducted an airstrike on the Bangkok Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Pekon Township, located on the Shan-Karenni border. In response, over 316 civilian organizations released a statement on September 12th, strongly condemning the attack.
The statement was jointly issued by Karenni and Myanmar civilian organizations, along with revolutionary forces.
“There is absolutely no reason to accept it because it is a completely inhumane act. The loss of innocent children hurts us a lot. Regarding this incident, I would also like to say that it is really necessary to take effective action from the responsible organizations,” said Lily, founder of the New Horizon Institute.
Due to the airstrike on the Bangkok IDP camp, eight children under the age of 15 and two adults in their 40s were killed. More than 20 people were injured, including eight who sustained serious injuries and are still receiving medical treatment.
It was reported that the area around the site of the bombing is now sealed off to preserve it as a future memorial site to ensure the incident is not forgotten.
A spokesperson for the statement said that in the pursuit of justice during this transitional period, both victims and perpetrators must be considered.
“There should be some form of recognition for them—something like a memorial. A gallery, perhaps, showcasing the tragic events. Such recognition is necessary, and for those who have lost their homes, there should be special attention given to their rehabilitation and restoration,” the spokesperson explained.
Currently, civilian organizations have not yet discussed or implemented any concrete actions regarding the transition period, according to the statement.
Since the military coup in 2021 up until September 2024, 515 civilians in Karenni State have been killed in airstrikes. Additionally, 52 churches, 25 schools, and 16 hospitals have been destroyed, according to the statement.
