On February 5, the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State announced the establishment of a Youth Affairs Department to provide special support for disadvantaged youths who have been deprived of opportunities.
According to Khun Thomas, the head of the newly formed department, the initiative aims to assist young people struggling with drug addiction and those who have been unable to access education due to the current transitional situation.
“We are still in discussions regarding the details of the programs. At this stage, we are focusing on employment opportunities during this transitional period, supporting young people who feel lost, and assisting those facing difficulties in continuing their education. Another priority is helping youths trapped in drug addiction. We are currently brainstorming ways to implement these initiatives effectively, and our government will gradually take further steps to carry them out,” said Khun Thomas.
As part of its transitional programs, the Youth Affairs Department plans to address various youth-related issues, including youth and sports, as well as drug prevention, he added.
Many young people believe that the newly established IEC Youth Affairs Department offers hope in addressing the widespread problem of drug use among youths, ensuring proper monitoring and rehabilitation efforts.
Additionally, the department is expected to support young people whose education was disrupted during the revolution, as well as CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement) students who participated in the armed resistance, by creating pathways for them to continue their education.
“What plans does IEC have for youths struggling with drug addiction and gambling? If the IEC can gain public trust and effectively mobilize support, the Youth Affairs Department will become one of the most powerful and reliable institutions,” said a young man from Dee Maw Hso Township.
Currently, the IEC continues to establish administrative mechanisms across Karenni State. With the addition of the Youth Affairs Department, the IEC now operates a total of 11 departments.
