The Burma army killed five people, whom soldiers abducted in Pekon Township, an area of southern Shan State where the army is battling for control with several different resistance forces.

An officer with the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force’s information department, one of the groups fighting the regime, told the Kantarawaddy Times that enemy soldiers shot and killed two men and abducted a woman and a child on April 20. They later killed the woman by beating her head and releasing the child.

“Her head was broken into pieces,” he says. “She was tortured by the Burma army soldiers.”

A few days later, the soldiers shot dead two civilians displaced by fighting.

The Kayan Women Organisation (KyWO) reported that U Mar O, 34, U Than Tun, 33, and Daw Ah Mu, 32, were killed on April 20. U Myo, 37, and Daw Sha, 42, were killed on April 23.

According to KyWO, the Pekon Health Community and soldiers from People’s Defence Force Battalion 2008, another group fighting against the junta in the region, recovered their bodies.
