Mawchi, Karenni State — A Myanmar military airstrike on Lehlohtee Village in the Mawchi area of Pasaung Township killed five members of a single family, according to U Banyar, Secretary (2) of the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State.
The airstrike occurred on July 9, with the military reportedly using a 500-pound bomb. All five fatalities were members of the same household.
“As far as we know, they were all from a single family,” said U Banyar.
The victims included a 3-year-old girl, an 8-year-old girl, a 28-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman, and a 57-year-old woman.
In addition to the fatalities, six others — three men and three women, including three children under the age of 15 — were injured. One woman sustained serious injuries, while the others are in stable condition, according to U Banyar.
The bombing also destroyed six civilian homes, a church, and a religious building.
Just two weeks earlier, on June 25, another airstrike by the Myanmar military on the same area killed eight men and left many others injured.
Although there have been no clashes in Mawchi, the military has now carried out at least seven airstrikes on the area, local sources report.
