On August 21, around 2 p.m., a landslide occurred in Mawchi, Hpasaung Township due to heavy rain, leading to damage to homes and the death of one person, according to local sources.

The landslide affected the Nyaungpin and Lokhalo Aungchanthar (also known as Kwat Thit) quarters. A local resident reported that a young man, approximately 21 years old, from Nyaungpin quarter, died in the incident.

“One person died in Nyaungpin. Four people were swept away, but three were rescued. The landslide happened quickly, and while three managed to escape, one couldn’t make it. He was buried under the mud and rocks,” said a resident of Mawchi.

The fatality occurred when the deceased tried to retrieve tin from the water (locally known as “Myaw Pote”) but was unfortunately swept away and drowned.

In addition, houses, shops, vehicles, and bridges in Lokhalo Aungchanthar (also known as Kwat Thit) quarter were damaged due to the landslide. Kantarawaddy Times is still verifying the details of the damage.

“Around Lokhalo and Kwat Thit, the landslide buried houses and shops near the stream. The rain was extremely heavy, and the shops were completely destroyed,” said a local resident of Mawchi who witnessed the event.

In the early of July, landslides also occurred in two quarters on Mawchi Mountain due to heavy rainfall, but no injuries were reported.
